Spees Awarded USDA Grant to Address Childhood Obesity

Colleen Spees, PhD, MeD, RDN, assistant professor in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, has received a $978,000 National Institute of Food and Agriculture – USDA Grant. This multi-year award embraces the three components of the agricultural knowledge system (extension, education and research) to develop an efficacious behavioral, social and environmental intervention to address childhood obesity. The goal is to promote obesity prevention strategies and fill the summer meal gap for children ages 8 –11 years who reside in low-resource communities. Collaborators include investigators, educators, staff, interns and students from Ohio State’s College of Medicine, Medical Dietetics, the Health Sciences program, the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences extension – Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, InFACT Discovery Theme and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
