President's Message

Bonnie Willis

Bonnie Willis Pic

As we find ourselves amid holiday preparations as well as being midway through this 2021-2022 OAND year, I pause to reflect on the leadership team for this Affiliate. Once again, I am humbled by the dedication to our profession Ohio dietitians demonstrate in countless ways. I am so very thankful and proud to be a member of OAND!

We have a unique opportunity to hear Colleen Spees, PhD, MEd, RDN, LD, FAND on December 1, 2021 share thoughts on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship Guidelines. I hope you will join me for this webinar.

Again, I look forward to seeing you at our 101st Annual OAND Conference on April 8, 2022! Our CPI Committee has planned an exciting program with dynamic speakers.

Congratulations to the team from Bowling Green State University on their recognition by AND’s Council on Future Practice for their Presentation at FNCE® 2021.

Wednesday this week, AND announced the theme for our upcoming National Nutrition Month 2022:  “Celebrate a World of Flavors,” encouraging the cultural heritage, traditions and recipes from all people. I can imagine many of you will have creative ways to share this message with the clients, patients, and people we serve.

In closing, I wish you all the peace and blessings of this season to you and your family.

Nutrition Ninja, Member Spotlight

Paige Wagner, Membership Chair

Candice Jones PhotoOur featured Nutrition Ninja this month is Candice Jones, MEd, RD, LD, CDCES, FAND. Candice graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Sciences and the University of Cincinnati with a Master of Education in Health Promotion and Education. In addition, she is finishing her Associate of Applied Business in Culinary Arts at the end of 2021.

Candice is currently the Dietetic Technology Program Chair at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, and is PRN (previously full-time) as a Diabetes Care Dietitian with the Christ Hospital Diabetes and Endocrine Center. She has won the Connecticut Dietetic Association’s Outstanding Didactic Student, along with being recognized as the House/Bruckmann Faculty Excellence Nominee and Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Her nutrition interest and passions include providing person-centered care through culturally appropriate dietary interventions. She loves learning about different cultures, food practices and helping clients prepare meals and snacks that they enjoy. She also stated that “there are no words to explain how wonderful it feels to hear that the client I worked with has “more energy” because their blood glucose levels have been improving.” When Candice was asked what inspires her the most in her daily work as a dietitian, she shared that she is inspired by the next generation and their excitement in the kitchen. She is inspired by learning how to adapt recipes based on a patient’s needs, along with being able to combine her background in diabetes and dietetics, with her culinary knowledge to provide a hands-on learning experience.

Candice loves camping, fishing and has a massive Lego collection! She also played tennis for the University of Connecticut. Most importantly, her favorite food is her grandmother’s baked macaroni and cheese. If she could give advice to future/young dietitians, she stated “Don’t be afraid of change, for it is in the only thing that is constant and don’t forget to have fun on your dietetic journey!”

Ohio Public Policy Update

Kay Mavko, State Regulatory Specialist

Kay Mavko

OAND Members,

Please send a quick e-mail , or call to your legislators office about HB 122!

HB 122 – Telehealth (Rep. Fraizer and Rep. Holmes) bill would permanently establish and modify requirements regarding the provision of telehealth services in Ohio.

The bill does the following:

Status: Passed out of the House 4/15/2021. Fourth Senate Health hearing 11/10/2021.

OAND has testified both in the Ohio House Insurance and Senate Health committees in support of this important legislation.

Please contact your Ohio Senators (by e-mail, letter, telephone, or in person) to tell them how important it is to keep the Telehealth bill moving. Explain to them the benefits of telehealth access for your patients - and you as a provider.

*****  Please note that on 11/10/21 the Medical Board extended it’s moratorium on taking action against licensees who practice telehealth from 12/31/2021 to the new date of 3/31/2022! Hopefully this will allow enough time for the legislature to pass and enact HB 122.

OAND reviewing proposed impairment rule changes

The OAND policy team is currently reviewing the Medical Board proposed changes to Administrative Rules 4731-02, 05, and 08 related to Impairment of allied professionals (including dietitians) who are licensed by the Board in preparation for a scheduled Public Hearing in early December.

The proposed amendments would significantly reduce the cost of the examination that is required to identify a suspected impaired professional, and permit both the examination and any required treatment to occur in outpatient settings (if appropriate) rather than the currently required in-patient stays that are mandated. Follow-up, and on-going monitoring requirements remain similar to the current requirements. However, overall costs to allied professionals would be dramatically reduced.

The OAND Policy Team believes that this is a welcome step that will permit access to treatment for dietitians who might previously have lacked the financial resources to take advantage of the Board’s “One-Bite” program.

Please look at the proposed rule changes (available on the Medical Board website under: “Laws and Rules,” “Newly Adopted & proposed Rules,” “Hearings,” December 12/3/21).

If you have concerns or suggestions contact Kay Mavko ASAP.

New rules on continuing education and Limited Permits were enacted over the summer.

Administrative Rules 4759-4-04 OAC – Continuing Education;  and 4759-4-08 OAC Limited Permit were enacted over the summer and include important changes. To find them, just search for the rule number in your browser.

Next year (2022) is a license renewal year so you will want to make sure that you understand the slightly different continuing education requirements related to jurisprudence continuing education.

Dietetics graduates who intend to apply for a limited permit license or dietitians who supervise limited permit holders will also benefit from reviewing the information in the rules.
