Session Description
Please join us as we learn the importance of policy basics and relationship-building with elected officials as well as the role and impact of the Ohio legislature and other regulatory bodies on the work of dietitians and dietetic technicians in the state of Ohio. Dietitians should be aware and take action to elevate the role of nutrition in health care and consumer protection.
Learning Objectives
At the close of the presentation, the attendee (RDN, NDTR, student, intern) will be able to:
- Summarize what the dietitian licensure compact is and describe at least two (2) benefits that it provides for dietitians who want to practice in multiple states
- Recognize the basics of public policy and how it impacts dietetics practice
- Increase the understanding of the importance of fostering and maintaining relationships
- Increase understanding of Ohio's Medicaid Structure and how to become a provider

Speaker Bios
Kay Mavko, MS, RDN, LD, is OAND’s State Regulatory Specialist (SRS) and a long-time Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics member from Dublin, Ohio who has worked in adult and pediatric nutrition, as a clinical dietitian, dietitian manager, and consultant, and then became the Director of the Ohio Board of Dietetics for over 13 years. Now retired from full-time employment, Kay currently is involved in public policy work in Ohio as the State Regulatory Specialist for the OAND and helps monitor the State Medical Board of Ohio activities related to dietitian licensure.
Manju Karkare, MS, RDN, LDN, CLT, FAND is a nationally recognized leader, mentor and activist. Manju has vast experience in the dietetics profession, from acute care and public health nutrition to corporate wellness and private practice. Originally from India, Manju received her MS in Food and Nutrition from the University of Kentucky. Her current private practice focuses on inclusive health and wellness, integrative and functional nutrition and food sensitivities as well as virtual cooking demos for corporate wellness. She has pursued her passion for nutrition, education and women’s empowerment through servant leadership within the dietetic profession as well as several non-profits.
Laura Poland RDN, LD is OAND’s State Nutrition Payment Specialist Co-Chair (NPS) and has been a dietitian for over 30 years and has worked in a variety of settings but by far her favorite area of focus is weight management and type 2 diabetes and prevention. Laura runs a private practice, Dietitian In Your Kitchen and is Director of Nutrition Programs at Swap Health. Swap Health is dedicated to providing nutrition services to low to middle-income patients for the prevention and control of chronic diseases. Laura is an active member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Columbus Dietetic Association, and the Nutrition Entrepreneur RDs of Central Ohio. Laura is currently serving on the Ohio Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics as the NSPS (Nutrition Services Payment Specialist), the State Media Representative, and the NSPS for the Columbus Dietetic Association.
